A lot of people have asked me whether or not I use photoshop, and the answer is no. All my drawings are traditional, I only adjust the contrast once its scanned in. : )

Tumblr Question

Thought you guys would be interested but someone asked me on my tumlr:

"could you give us some insight to your artistic process? especially with your stylistic linework?"

My response:
So for me I like the experience of feeling inspired to draw something and create! I draw from my gut and from my first impression.  When I draw I try to think like an animator and get inside the head of what it is I’m drawing.  I find that the more I’m concerned about the character the easier it is to draw, because If I think about the mechanics I get overwhelmed and frustrated.  I draw my drawings, as if I were to animate it. I think about what happens before and after the pose is drawn. I take under consideration energy, force, weight, perspective(to some degree) and silhouette.  Silhouette is key for me because its essential for the veiwer to interpret the pose.  It has to be as clear as possible because I want the veiwer to feel the way I felt or the way the character feels in that moment.  I want to make a statement, be it loud or subtle, thats true to the drawing or character.  I try to make sure there is rhythm and balance to my work so that it is visually pleasing to the eye. Lastly once I have an idea I try to rework it until its the best way I can communicate it, meaning If I have to do alot of thumbnails, then so be it. I want to put out my best, because if I don’t then people won’t judge my work appropiately because its not my full effort.

As far as linework.  My main influence is Milt Kahl,  I love how he animates and draws his characters. They are graphic shapes but are solid once turned in space and there soooo apealing! He’s the one I look up to in terms of draftmanship. I also like Al Hirschfeld and Ronald Searle, Earl Oliver Hurst, Mary Blair, Eyvind Earle and Walt Perogoy. Their work is beautiful and I love their shape language!  Straights against curves are essential for me and they are oh so satisfying! Its my foundation when it comes to character design, everything becomes pliable.  For example, the brow to the eyline, the top of the head to the chin, the chin to the waist, the ears to the side of the face… etc.
I can go on but I’ll be rambling haha hope that helps :)
